Traditionally, textiles in Kachchh were woven using pit looms, with visual designs added through extra weft insertions on plain-weave fabrics. The motifs, inspired by the flora and fauna of the semi-arid desert, served as marks of identity for different tribes and communities. The weavers, known as “Vankars,” were traditionally associated with specific groups, finding market support within their communities. Today, while their market has expanded beyond local groups, their textiles still draw inspiration from the extra weft technique.
