A handmade bag in applique work is a pouch used as a letterbox in ancient times.
Applique is an intricate sewing technique popular in Gujarat. It is decorative hand needlework in which different colour and sizes of fragments of fabric are stitched into a larger piece to create a design or pattern. Divided into two parts the bag has three divisions to keep letters on one side.
Handmade from red and white fabrics it has angular and abstract patterns on both ends of the pouch.
Applique is used mainly for festive occasions but it is deeply embedded in the lives of many Agro-pastoral communities.
