 Product Description:

Mata-ni-pachedi termed in the Gujarati language where Mata means ‘goddess’, ni means ‘belongs to’ and Pachedi means ‘behind’. Mata-ni-pachedi is also known as ‘Kalamkari’ by the common man as owing the similarity to the Kalamkari technique. This art form was initially brought to Ahmedabad by the nomadic Devipujak community (originally called Vaghari) from Gujarat, who settled in Ahmedabad on the banks of the Sabarmati River more than 300 years ago. Typically, the Pachedi’s were made on large hand spun rectangular cotton pieces on which the artists of the Devipujak community hand-painted khand (scenes) and depictions of the goddess Mata. A traditional Mata Ni Pachedi has only three colours – maroon representing earth, black representing evil eye and white for purity.
