An entrance decoration hanging locally known as ‘Toran’ is hand-made in Kathipa embroidery. ‘Toran’ is used to decorate the main entrance of the house. It is considered very auspicious in Hinduism and it is believed that it is to please and attract the goddess of wealth - Lakshmi and also to welcome guests.
The name coined for the embroidery ‘Kathipa’ is suggestive of the community practicing this embroidery. People who migrated from different parts of the world settled in Kutch and Saurashtra and brought different kinds of Embroidery to the country. Geometric patterns engulfed between borders constructing checked forms and heavily used mirror work are key characteristics of this embroidery.
