It is the vahana (vehicle) of Shiva - the god of skies & destruction. The idol handcrafted by skilled artisans using brass has a plethora of bells around his neck. Here the Nandi has a snake canopy as a protector and guardian, and the snake (sheshnag) has a strong association with Shiva and Nandi.
