Shadow Puppets Originated in a small village named Nimmalakunta in Andhra Pradesh. Tholu Bommalata literally means leather puppet dance and can be dated back to the 3rd century BC. The Shadow puppets are are made of goat leather. they are perforated And were originally colored with vegetable dyes. The shows narrate episodes from Ramayana, Mahabharta, Krishna Leela and folklore. Modern modes of entertainment caused a decline in the patronage of shadow puppetry. The craftsmen have kept their art alive by creating other products like lamp shades and wall hangings.
