In The Clever Dancer, a young man has earned a reputation as a scholar and a highly intelligent man, in the great city of Ujjain. He then sets off with his friend to establish his reputation in other places. He heads for Pataliputra. On the way, they come across a beautiful young girl picking mangoes. She easily outwits Muladeva and then disappears. He then goes in search of her, to reclaim his reputation.
