Origin: 20th century, Kerala
A traditional antique lamp from Kerala, locally known as Nilavilakku is made up of brass. The tall oil lamp has a ‘Lingam’ shaped finial at the center of the oil well which sits atop a tapered stem. The Nilavilakku lamp is used at festivals, performances and to mark all auspicious occasions and is integral to several rituals and ceremonies in Hindu families in Kerala. As the sun sets, young girls of the family bring the lighted lamps to the verandah of the house, continued with evening prayers.
